Santa
The “Santa” print was originally developed by John Mahnic to be a Christmas print that people could hang in their homes year round. The character in Santa’s face, combined with the children hidden throughout the beard, have made this one of the best selling prints of all time. The girl that is being handed the flowers to is John’s daughter, Tiffany. Near the bottom of the print, a girl has her elbows on a child’s head, who happens to be John’s son, Michael. The child with the glasses looking over the rims is supposed to be Santa as a child. In the bottom right corner is John’s right thumb print (he has been ‘signing’ his pieces with his thumbprint since 1975, when he was denied entry into an art show where his painting was featured because they didn’t believe that a fourteen year old actually did the work. Matching the thumb print would ‘prove’ the work was his!).
John originally developed the idea at the University of Regina in 1983, but never completed the original painting until 1996, which was at that time called “The Spirit of Christmas”. In 2004, the painting was given a complete overhaul, where every square inch was repainted. The nose was made smaller, the beard tone was changed from purple/blue to silver, the eyebrows were made smaller or covered, and all of the children were touched up. There was a significant enough alteration to the entire painting that it was re-titled as “Santa”, which is the name that it has today.
