Zebra Refs
The “Zebra Refs” painting was originally developed in the 1980’s. The idea was that hockey referees, in their striped shirts, are often called ‘zebras’. It was a logical progression to turn the actual refs into the animals themselves. This painting was turned into a detailed oil painting around 1998. The source photo originally featured Ray Scapinello, John D’Amico, and Bob Meyers, back in the days when players and refs still wore the old-fashioned tube skates. In the background John has painted a number of the NHL rules taken directly from the rulebook (several of which are obviously not enforced!).
